Setup

8 Rockledge is a 1930 oceanfront estate in Laguna Beach by Garrett Van Pelt, protected under the Mills Act and restored over three years. After the restoration, LandFluent was brought in to design its gardens.

oaki produced the garden renderings in early 2026.

Tension

Landscape is usually the soft filler at the edge of an architecture render. Here the garden is the commission. The planting design had to read as designed, species, structure, and season, against a house and an ocean that both fight for the eye.

Approach

The garden holds the foreground and the Pacific holds the horizon; the house sits between them as context, not subject. Coastal light, the hour when planting throws shadow and reads as structure.
